Blade: The Series Officially Abandoned by Spike TV

So the rumors are no longer rumors. Spike TV has officially announced that they won’t be picking up the show for a second season. You can check out an official response by Spike TV here, explaining how the “network was disappointed with the audience turnout and the ratings.”

Now, I’ve been reading the multitude of responses here and at other websites and fellow fans are pissed off and flat out mad at Spike TV. I, while definitely disappointed, am not mad at anybody, just sad.

We can’t blame Spike TV for this, as the show really didn’t pull in the ratings they were looking for. I’m sorry if that makes me sound like some sort of sell out or something, but trust me that I have absolutely no connection with Spike TV at all. I’m just another fan - a fan that happens to run a fansite of the show.

Obviously I’m not happy about the show being pulled. Like all of you, I’m not going to be able to watch the rest of this great story unfold. However, I also have this fansite that is now kind of screwed, so this news stings me doubly hard. Even so, I totally understand where Spike is coming from, and it really isn’t their fault. They are a network that brands themselves as a network for guys, and as such, need their television shows to bring in large amounts of male viewers. It sounds as though the ratings as a whole for Blade: The Series were decent, it’s just that there weren’t enough male viewers to please their advertisers. As such, they decided to pull the show, which leaves us, the fans, out in the cold.

Blade: The Series Cancelled?

Ok, so everybody is going crazy over at the official forums about how it appears that Jill Wagner sent out a MySpace bulletin saying Blade: The Series won’t be coming back next season. It’s been mentioned by a couple different people, but I don’t use MySpace so I haven’t seen it myself.

I actually haven’t seen any news of this anywhere else, so I’m not sure how 100% accurate and certain this is. I do know that I’ll be following up as much as possible and trying to figure out if this is true or not. If any of you have any word, please let us all know.

[update 1:] TheBigBadWolf, the admin over at the official forums, has posted a petition thread for people to reply to to try and get Blade to come back next season. I haven’t seen him actually come right out and say that he knows for sure it was cancelled so I’m not sure what information he is going off of. Either way, it’s appears to be another nail in the coffin. You can go ahead and post your support in the petition thread here. I’ll keep updating this post until there’s something confirmed.

[update 2:]Neil Jackson has posted on his MySpace blog that the show has, indeed, been removed from Spike TV’s lineup next season. Also, Geoff Johns has also posted on his MySpace blog that the show won’t be back for a second season. Things definitely look bleak now, though Jackson did say New Line is shopping around for another network to pick it up.

[update 3:] Neil Jackson has posted at the official forums (using his girlfriend’s account “Tinkerbell”) confirming again that the show has not been picked up for a second season. He does reiterate that New Line is definitely behind the show and is shopping around the other networks trying to get them to pick it up… so there’s still a chance.

New Poll: How Old Are You?

After the last couple hardhitting Blade related polls, I’ve decided to make this week’s poll all about you. With a few hundred visitors coming to this site every day (and a couple thousand during the finale), there’s likely to be a wide range ages among the readers. As such, this week’s poll contains various age groups (completely made up by me with no significance) that you can select.

  • 12 and under
  • 13-18
  • 19-29
  • 30-39
  • 40-49
  • 50-59
  • 60-69
  • 70 and over

The votes received aren’t attached to who you are so there’s no privacy issues in case you’re wondering. I honestly have no clue what the breakdown will end up being, which is a big reason for my wanting to do it.

When I post the results Tuesday I’ll also reveal my age, which I don’t think I’ve done here yet. I will say that it is one of the options above, so you can narrow it down from there.

Poll Results: Who Doesn’t Like Angels and Demons?

So the tallies are in and surprisingly (to me at least), it wasn’t the pilot or the finale that took home the most votes. Below are the final numbers.

What’s Your Favorite Episode?
Episode 10: Angels and Demons: 39% (53)
Episode 13: Conclave: 26% (36)
Episode 12: Monsters: 10% (14)
Episode 1&2: Pilot: 9% (12)
Episode 8: Sacrifice: 5% (7)
Episode 5: Bloodlines: 4% (6)
Episode 9: Turn of the Screw: 2% (3)
Episode 11: Hunters: 2% (3)
Episode 4: Descent: 1% (1)
Episode 6: The Evil Within: 1% (1)
Episode 3: Death Goes On: 0% (0)
Episode 7: Delivery: 0% (0)
Total: 136

Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved episode 10, Angels and Demons, but I really thought the finale was going to blow everything else out of the water. I guess Marcus is that big of a draw that a flashback episode revealing his motives can be powerful - it was for me.

I will admit, though, that I voted for the finale. For me it was a great way to wrap up most of the first season while also leaving us with just enough questions to keep us guessing for the (hopeful) next season. Episodes 9,10, and 12 were all at the top of my list and other than episode 9, it seems that most of you agree.

Only episodes 3 (Death Goes On) and 7 (Delivery) came up empty. I think 3 really hurt because it brought up the notion of the asher groups but then the remaining episodes never came back to it. As such the asher storyline, while great and a personal favorite of mine, never became an integral part of the story. I think episode 7 was one of those stepping stone episodes that had to be made to progress the story, but just doesn’t hold up strongly on its own.

So besides the actual winner of the poll, the results are very much inline with what I thought. Thanks to all who participated and be on the look out Thursday for the next poll. As always feel free to discuss the results of this poll in the comments below.

House of Chthon Glyph Wallpaper

House of Chthon WallpaperI’ve created a new section here that’ll contain various Blade: The Series wallpapers that I create. A thumbnail of the first wallpaper can be seen on the left. It’s the House of Chthon glyph with a little style applied - nothing too fancy.

I have it available for two resolutions 1280×1024 and 1024×768. If you’d like a specific resolution that I don’t have, just let me know and I’ll see if I can whip it up for you.

Comments and suggestions, as always, are greatly appreciated.

[update: Due to a request by Courtney in the comments below, I’ve added a pink version as well as a blue version. Both are 1280×1024.]

Geoff Johns Posts Season 2 Update

Over at the official forums, Geoff Johns has made a post about what’s going on with Season 2. Unfortunately, what’s going on is that they are still waiting to find out if the show will be back or not.

I guess it’s good that they haven’t decided to not bring it back yet, since things seemed to be leaning that way a few weeks before the finale. Hopefully the fact that they haven’t announced anything yet means that they will be bringing the show back and are just working out some details.

Johns also mentions in his post that both Nelson Lee and Neil Jackson will be guest-starring on a series during the next month, though there is no word on what series yet. Once I find out what show they’ll be appearing on, I’ll definitely let you all know.

I wish this post actually had some concrete info, but at least we know there’s still a chance (and hopefully a good one at that).

Steve Bacic Gatecon Photos

Reader Anne wrote in letting me know about some pretty cool photos of Steve Bacic (Frederick) that were taken at this years Gatecon. You can check the pictures out at his official site here. There are some pretty good photos in there, mostly of him goofing around (standing around with a lightsabre and chef hat, getting punched by an old woman, etc).

His character in Blade is definitely one I’d like to see more of if there’s a second season, so let’s hope Spike TV gives us a chance to see more of Bacic next year.

Thanks again Anne for the link!

Reader Question: Chthon Ended What Tyranny?

Chris has sent in a question that I could use some help with. It’s regarding something that was said in the final episode.

Chris writes:
in the final episode, it was said that the lord Chthon took the sword and ended the tyranny of…and he said a name. Was that another house? They use very poor sound for some of the sences…or I am going deaf be either way I really didn’t hear it.
Any info?
Thanks

First off, thanks for the great question Chris. Second, I tried to find a part where they say what tyranny Chthon ended, but I came up empty. Near the beginning of the episode Marcus talks about how he’s going to change the world and how he’ll take the sword that Chthon used to end some tyranny, but he doesn’t say exactly what tyranny (unless I missed it somewhere).

If I had to guess, I’d say it was the tyranny of the House of Erebus. The House of Erebus is the house that the pureblood Alex was from (the guy Chase turned to vampire goo). It’s also the house that Deacon Frost was from in the first Blade movie. It has been said that the House of Erebus and the House of Chthon hate each other and had a huge war years ago. My guess is that it was Erebus that ruled over the House of Chthon until Chthon took the sword and ended that tyranny.

However, like I said I couldn’t find a place where they say exactly who Chthon used the sword to defeat, so if anybody knows for sure or perhaps knows where to find it in the episode that’d be great. I do have all the episodes recorded on Tivo so I can go back and check out any scenes that might mention it. Also, if anybody has any better guesses as to what the tyranny may be, send in your comments below.

[update: Thanks to Robert in the comments below I was able to find the spot where the head of Chthon mentions the tyranny that Chthon stopped.]

It’s kind of hard to hear, but it definitely sounds like he says Chthon ended the tyranny of Argento. I tried to do some digging and see if I could find any references to Argento in the Blade universe but I came up empty. My guess is still that it has to do with Erebus and perhaps Argento was the leader of Erebus until Chthon killed him and gave the House of Chthon the power they enjoyed for years after.

If anybody knows for sure what name was said or perhaps if you’ve heard of an Argento in the Blade universe, please leave a comment below so that we can all stop wracking our brains.

Podcast Interview With Blade Cast

I found this podcast interview with some of the Blade cast members via the Comic Monsters forum. I believe Jill Wagner, Jessica Gower, and Kirk Jones are all in there somewhere, but since I’m at work, I’m unable to listen to it right now. Once I get home I’ll definitely listen to the whole thing and post my thoughts on it.

[update: I’ve had a chance to listen to the podcast now. My thoughts on it are below.]

Ok, first off, if you want to listen to the podcast, skip ahead to about the 25 minute mark because everything before that is fluff and intro that has nothing to do with the Blade series or the interviews with the cast. Second thing to note, the interviews were actually done awhile ago, just after the pilot.

After you get passed all the junk in the beginning, you’ll be treated with a pretty well done interview with Jessica Gower. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly sexy her voice was. She also carried herself very well on the phone and interviewed extremely well. She talked about how Blade: The Series is her first American show and how she got the job only four months after moving to Los Angeles. She also says how she actually first auditioned for the part of Krista Starr but casting people felt she’d be better as Chase. Gower did admit that she wasn’t really a fan of the movies - a refreshing bit of honesty from an actor/actress.

37 minutes into the podcast Jill Wagner’s interview comes on. There really isn’t much “meat” in Wagner’s interview, though she does talk about how she’s a huge fan of the Blade movies even though she’s not really into comic books. She also says how she got the part and moved to Vancouver one week after her first audition.

Kirk Jone’s wraps up the podcast, starting his interview near the 53 minute mark. In my opinion, his interview was the weakest by far. He came off as if he doesn’t know how to interview well, with the interviewer having to jump in many times to keep the interview going after Jones wouldn’t answer fully. His part of the podcast focused mostly on his love of comic books. It sounds as if the X-Men and especially Wolverine are his favorite comics. He’s also very excited about the Blade show and hopes it will do well.

Overall I think Gower’s interview is worth the listen. Wagner does alright, though she doesn’t really go into any new information. Maybe it’s just that Jones’ interview was at the end, but for me, his interview was quite boring and didn’t give up any interesting tidbits.

New Poll: What’s Your Favorite Episode?

Sticking with the whole playing favorites theme, this week’s poll asks you what your favorite episode is. I’ve listed the episodes below with links to my recaps of each so that you can remind yourself what each one was about.

Will you vote for the big season finale? Perhaps one of the flash back episodes? Were the House of Leichen episodes the best? Were the Steppin’ Razor episodes even better? I know there’s a lot to choose from, and I’m pretty sure it will be a landslide for one episode, but I’m curious to see what episodes you all thought were the strongest.

The poll will end sometime Tuesday afternoon so be sure to vote before then!
