Poll Results: The Real Blade

It was a big issue for many during the first season of Blade: The Series, could Kirk “Sticky” Jones make it as Blade? In a previous poll, it turned out that nearly 90% of you thought he did either “okay” or “excellent”. That poll didn’t answer whether or not you all felt he did a better job than the original Blade, Wesley Snipes, so this latest poll asked, and 77 of your answered.

Who Was the Better Blade?
Wesley Snipes: 69% (53)
Kirk “Sticky” Jones: 31% (24)
Total Votes : 77

I don’t think it’s a big shock that Snipes ended up with the most votes. I personally was a big surpised that he only won by 69%. Granted, this site is a fansite dedicated to the television show, so obviously the results are likely to be skewed in its favor, but to me, Snipes was really in a whole other league.

Don’t get me wrong, I thought Jones did a great job, but his martial arts and acting abilities couldn’t even compare to Snipes in my opinion. Now, it’s not entirely fair to compare them since the TV Blade was considerably “gimped” such that he wasn’t nearly as much a focus in the show as he was in the movies. Similarly, he wasn’t nearly as badass, with the ability to take on incredibly amounts of vampires with ease.

However, even while considering that handicap, I still think Snipes was just leaps and bounds beyond Jones.

  1. Hold up, hold up, hold up! I saw Wesley in the beginning of “Blade: Trinity” and there is no way that I can say that I agree that Wesley did the best job ever. Sure, his fighting was good but he bored me out with the Blade he put out. I’ve seen him as Nino Brown, the Drug Lord, on “New Jack City”, which he pulled off 100%. So I can’t say he’s a bad actor either. But what I like about Sticky was he brought out a more human Blade, which is much better and very classy. But then again, I saw a completely different Sticky Fingaz compared to the first time I first got to know about him. Then again, I’m into Hip Hop and Gangster movies so you don’t have to agree with me. I just get so confused when people say that Wesley was so strong in the role…

  2. Well said Angela,

I am a fan of Blade the movie (Trilogy) and I am also an equal fan of Wesley Snipes as Blade. I am not a Wesley Snipes “Acting” fan.

I will concur unequivicably that Snipes MA (martial arts) skills are in a entirely different league than KJ but ACTING?

In my humble opinion WS is not that solid as an actor. New Jack City, White man Cant Jump and potentially Money Train I thought his performance was Good but he was part of a steller cast in all three. Snipes has an amazing Screen Presence but not the definition of a Thespian in my opinion.

So my conclusion I enjoyed KJ in the TV role of Blade and actually feel WS would not have done a better job of Acting the role but definately a better job and a more believable job of Kicking Ass in the role and keeping the existing fans that only see Welsey as Blade - happy.

Quite honestly the term Acting for the depiction of the Blade character is IMO not an accurate term to define the role. Blade, the character, is about Screen Presence and Martial Arts. Wesley has better Screen Presence and much better Martial Art skills.

What we did see with KJ that we did not see with WS is, as Angela mentioned, a more human side… I will say I enjoyed the TV series more than the Movies but that is because they are two completely different kettles of fish. The TV series allowed us 14 hours of Blade (a different Blade), The Vampire Houses, the Ashers and interaction with the humans…. The White Prince episode. The TV series had a significant story line that was truly monsterous while the Movies were a product with a beginning, middle and end completed all within approximately 2 hours.

Tough to compare in my opinion.

I am going to miss the TV series of that there is no doubt. I still cross my fingers for “something” more.

    Cheers!

  3. Is Arnold Schwarzenegger a great actor? No. Is he great in the movies he’s in? Hell yes.

While I do think Snipes is still a decent actor, like Jeff is saying, his screen presence is very good. In my opinion, he was amazing as movie Blade. The role didn’t really require too much acting (similar to Terminator movies not really requiring Arnold to act like anything other than a robot), but the role did demand an actor that portrayed “badassiness”, and Snipes did just that - much more so than Jones in the television show.

  4. Add another Hell Yes to Swartzy! “Ill be Back” - great acting ;) .

    We agree *I think* Squirrel!

So to full circle the fuel to the “debate”…

Angela….. Screen Presence combined with “badassiness” are why I beleive the fans state Wesley was so strong in the role.

But I am with the KJ was good enough and actually played a different role in the TV series and I can appreciate all the votes in his favor. The issue of who did a “better job” has to be placed in context of the forum. One was in the Movies (Box Office) and was ALL Blade ALL the time (excepting Trinity perhaps - ironically the worst movie of the three in the box office) and the other was in a TV series where it seemingly at times was more about the Houses and Wagner than Blade and the Mythos.

I think two different kettle of fish both most excellent.

    Cheers!

  5. Ah come on now, don’t judge Snipes based on his previous roles in other movies, judge him on his role as Blade, its that simple. And yes, I thought both actors did a pretty well job as Blade. I mean yes I was disappointed not to see Snipes in the series, but Jones actually pulled it off pretty well and I dont really care if Jones continues to play Blade, even if its in Blade 4(plus, Snipes stated he wants to try Black Panther now). Most people would think that Snipes was a better Blade, but is that because he’s better Blade, or the first Blade? Think about it, the Blade series came out AFTER the trilogy, which puts it automatically in its shadow. And there’s also the whole martial arts and scenes with both actors kickin’ some vampiric ass debate. That would probably be more the directors responsibility. They lay out the sand boxes, and the actors just play in them.
Now, if I had to choose one….I’d pick Snipes, because I think he fits the whole Blade profile the best.
