Blade the Franchise - Whats New Line to do?

The following article was sent in by frequent site visitor Jeff Thomas.
Good morning/evening all!

Here is a look at some numbers… an extrapolation to put numbers into context following the aforementioned premise.

Blade Trinity sold 7,729,894 tickets. Lets assume that some of the ticket buyers came as a couple… lets say 25% of those. The contrast being a “couple” at home watching Blade the TV series. So that narrows the Blade Movie Target audience for the TV series to 5.8 Million potential viewers. So of this viewership only 2.5 Million show up to the Premiere. I am wondering if the other 3.3 Million were aware of the TV series. Those fans that believe the “majority” of fans watching the premiere were Blade the Movie fans would suggest that at least the Blade fans would have been aware of the
Pilot on Spike… Where were they?

Did they not tune in because WS was not the Lead?
Did they not tune in because they were unaware of the TV series.. or potentially Spike?
Did they not tune in because they were unavailable Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m.?
Perhaps they did not have Spike in their programming line up?

To move this premise forward. If you are New Line…

a) are you going to cater your TV series to the movie fans?
b) are you going to dare attempt a 4th movie without WS as the lead?
c) are you going to look for a new Network/Cable host based on a retention of 1 Million (approximate) fans post episode 7? Is it worth shopping another network?

These are my thoughts to invoke specific conversation if wanted. I suggest a) and b) are futile and perhaps option c) is the direction New Line takes. I further suggest that if the movie fans were to be lenient and accept a new character in the role this franchise would survive. There is still the feint possibility this franchise could survive regardless as I believe there are enough existing movie fans that did enjoy the product combined with the potential new viewership that remains relatively untapped in my opinion.

I suggest that New Line and Goyer knew that for this project to be successful and subsequently an option of producing a Blade 4 they had to cater to the TV viewing demographic not just the Movie Fan demographic and that is exactly what they did. They needed to find a large demographic that would not have predisposed concepts as to what Blade is/was (a.k.a. WS). I was personally disappointed in the 2.5 Million viewers as I suspected it would be a much larger turn out but as I have stated before I still believe Spike was not the right host. Unfortunately the pilot was not very good.
Action scenes were definitely weak and as a stand alone episode it just was not that entrancing. I do believe, as seemingly a few others to the tune of 1 Million, that the continuing episodes increased in value and the storyline continued to intrigue many. If the TV series remains in Cancellation land I suspect Blade the franchise follows suit.

d) What are your thoughts on the Blade Franchise?
e) Where does New Line go now?
f) Is Blade on the big screen or small screen gone for good?

If there are any takers on the potential of a new TV series or even if you
think this is an impossibility I pose this question:

g) Hypothetically would you watch if they changed the Lead?

Take care!!

First off, thanks to Jeff for the great article! There's a lot of great information and speculation in there.

Now, he brings up a few questions in there for everybody to toss in their input - namely:
d) What are your thoughts on the Blade Franchise?
e) Where does New Line go now?
f) Is Blade on the big screen or small screen gone for good?
g) Hypothetically would you watch if they changed the Lead?

I'll post my own thoughts on those questions here and hope that you all will add your input in the comments below.

d - I personally love the Blade franchise. I love the movies and I love the television series. I admit that I haven't read any of the comics, so I can't comment on that part of the franchise.

e - In one of the previous poll results I gave my nod to the Sci Fi channel being a great possible home for the show as well as mentioning a few other decent possibilities. We know New Line is still behind the show and I'm sure they are going to do everything they can to keep it alive on a new network if at all possible.

f - No. Blade will be back in some form or another. The comic has just started up and hopefully the television series hasn't come to an end.

g - Would I watch? Yes. Do I want them to change the lead? No. I feel Sticky is a fairly weak actor in my opinion. However, he's already made his mark on the character and I've come to know the "TV" Blade as the one Sticky has portrayed. As such, I hope he remains the Daywalker, though I'd definitely still watch if he weren't.

Jill Wagner and Jessica Gower at the Scream Awards

Well, apparently I should have tuned in to watch Spike TV's Scream Awards since it turns out that our favorite vampire vixens, Jill Wagner and Jessica Gower, were in attendance.

Reader Jessica sent in the info along with a couple links to photos of the two at the awards show. There is a link to a photo of both Jill and Jessica as well as this one of just Jill. They look just as sexy as they always do.

I still don't know if I would have watched the show since it did sound like a giant fluff piece that had really no interesting value. However, the fact that both Jill and Jessica were there sure would have been tempting.

Not surprisingly the United States makes up the vast majority of site visitors. The series aired primarily in the United States, though with fairly accessible online downloads (legal and illegal), it's clear that the show did manage to reach a variety of locations.

English speaking nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada all make a strong showing (save for Ireland). Germany had the most votes for a single non-English speaking nation (Europe managed to bring in quite a few for the non-listed European countries) and Africa doesn't seem to have anybody interested in the show (or maybe just not in this fansite).

Like I mentioned in the comments of the initial poll post, I'm located in the West Coast - Southern California to be more precise. This means I was watching the West Coast feed (a few hours behind the East Coast air time). For those of you that waited up to read my episode recaps, you may be able to deduce that I was writing and posting up those recaps pretty quickly after the show (tried not to stay up too late).

Thanks to all who voted in the poll, it's always interesting to learn more about fellow fans and patrons to this site. As always be on the lookout for the next poll come Thursday and if you have any suggestions don't hesitate to throw them my way!

Wesley Snipes Indicted For Tax Fraud

"Blade" trilogy actor Wesley Snipes was indicted on eight counts of tax fraud earlier this morning. He is being accused of using false refund claims for nearly $12 million in 1996 and 1997. He's also being charged with failing to file tax returns between 1999 and 2004.

Snipes faces up to 16 years in prison if convicted, though he hasn't been arrested since authorities don't know where he is.

I guess the thing about having a lot of money is that you always want more - or something like that.

Blade: The Series Roleplaying Site

If you're interested in roleplaying within the Blade: The Series universe, you can check out this site here. Apparently they are looking for more sign ups so be sure to head on over there if you're into that sort of thing.

I personally don't have the time to put enough effort into it, but it's definitely an interesting concept and I'd love to do something like that in the future. Maybe by the time series gets picked up for a second or third season (fingers crossed) I'll have some extra time on my hands (though not likely).

New Poll: Where Are You Located?

This poll idea was inspired (aka stolen) from reader Colleen. Like Colleen, I'm curious to know where everybody is located, so this poll asks you just that.

    Where Are You Located?
  • USA - West Coast

  • USA - East Coast

  • USA - Central

  • United Kingdom

  • Canada

  • Australia

  • Germany

  • France

  • Mexico

  • Italy

  • Spain

  • Brazil

  • Netherlands

  • Ireland

  • Other - Asia

  • Other - Europe

  • Other - Africa

  • Other - South America

Obviously the poll choices don't include every country out there. If it did, the sidebar would scroll forever. I apologize to anybody whose country is not in the list, though I did add "other" choices for the remaining areas. I chose the countries above based on some of my website statistics, using the countries with the most visitors as the choices you see above. I also split the USA into 3 regions so that we can get a better view of where in the United States most people are from.

Feel free to post where you live below, maybe you'll find some neighbors that are fellow Blade fans.

Poll Results: Let There Be Hope

Blade: The Series may be down, but hopefully it isn't out. 197 of you have cast your vote for the networks you think should save our favorite vampire series. Below are the results as well as my take on the different networks.

Which Network Should Pick Up Blade?
SciFi Channel: 50% (98)
FX: 17% (33)
USA: 9% (18)
HBO: 9% (18)
TNT: 5% (10)
Showtime: 5% (10)
TBS: 3% (6)
G4: 2% (4)
Total Votes: 197

It's not a surprise to see the SciFi channel catching most of the votes, but to have 50% of the votes is quite amazing. I was also a bit surprised to see FX as the second spot and thought G4 would have had a better showing (though I'm glad it didn't). Instead of doing just a brief bit on the results, I've decided to compile a list of my thoughts on each network, including why I think they may or may not be a good fit for Blade. They are ordered in the original order of the poll as to not throw in too much bias.

Blade: The Series Yahoo Group

A Yahoo Group for Blade: The Series has just been created by some fans and you can check it out right here. If you're a fan of the show and a fan of Yahoo Groups, you should head on over and see what it's all about.

There doesn't appear to be much there just yet, but they promise to have photos, news, fan fiction, and more. I've tried out a few Yahoo Groups in the past and didn't really care for how they work, but I'm sure there are a few of you out there that may be interested so if you do try it out, let the rest of us know how it goes.

New Poll: Which Network Should Pick Up Blade?

With Spike TV dropping Blade, the only real chance of seeing the story play out is if another television network picks up the series. Various cast and crew have said that New Line is still behind the show and is, in fact, shopping around for new networks. As such, this week's poll asks you which network YOU would most want to see pick up Blade. Again, vote for the network you would most like see Blade on, not which one you think is most likely.

  • USA

  • SciFi Channel

  • TNT

  • FX

  • G4

  • TBS

  • HBO

  • Showtime

The above list contains the networks I singled out for the poll. I chose the above networks based on what I thought were viable options. I highly doubt a major network like NBC, CBS, FOX, or ABC will pick up the show so I didn't include those. Likewise I didn't throw in stations like Lifetime or Discovery since those are clearly not real options.

Remember, vote for the station you'd most like to see pick up the show, not which one is most likely to do it. As such, things to think about when choosing would be how loyal you think the network would be to the show, how good a fit it would be with the current programming, and perhaps specific time slots you could see the show filling.

As always the poll will end next Tuesday in the afternoon.

Poll Results: Age Before Beauty

So the results are in and it appears that most readers are relatively young. This really isn't a surprise as the younger age groups are/were the television show's target audience.

How Old Are You?
19 - 29: 47% (57)
30 - 39: 23% (28)
13 - 18: 18% (22)
40 - 49: 7% (8)
50 - 59: 2% (3)
12 and under: 1% (1)
70 and over: 1% (1)
60 - 69: 0% (0)
Total Votes: 120

19-29 took the biggest chunk of votes, which is how I'd thought it would go. Surprisingly, the 30 - 39 group beat out the 13 - 18 group. I was suspecting a stronger showing from the 18 and under group partly because it seemed like the show would appeal more towards that group, but also because you usually see the younger groups online more and I would have suspected more of them visiting this site.

It's great to see one vote for each of the extremes, though hopefully the 12 and under voter isn't much below 13.

As for me, I'm 26. I'm not sure if that comes as a surprise or not. Hopefully my writing doesn't come off as being from a 12 year old - but then again, you never know. I, personally, have been into vampire movies and shows for as long as I can remember. The vampire movie Lost Boys actually used to be my favorite movie growing up. My fondness of vampire entertainment was my motivation to start this site (even before the show aired).

Anyway... that's enough personal mumbo jumbo for now - back to our regularly scheduled program. Oh, and as always, thanks to everybody who participated in the poll, it's really great to see a good turnout even after the show's (hopefully temporary) hiatus.
